As soon as your computer connects to the Internet, applications often have permission to send any information wherever they need to. Little Snitch takes note of this activity and allows you to decide for yourself what happens with this data. That being said, I don't think Little Snitch is "must have" software; these features are fairly esoteric. There are also several alternatives: TCPBlock and glowworm for the firewall and Rubbernet for the monitoring. Price: Radio Silence costs around $9 and comes with a testing trial of 30 days. You get your money back if it doesn’t meet your expectations. There’s also a 24-hour free trial available for those who want to test this software’s limits in a single stretch. However, there isn't just one door for every single network connection to go through, there are hundreds! Each of these doors is called a port, and each port is used for different purposes. For example, normal web browsing is done through port 80, secure web browsing is done through port 443, and file transfer is done through 21. There are times where you don’t want to get interrupted by any network related notifications. With Silent Mode you can quickly choose to silence all connection warnings for a while. You can then later review the Silent Mode Log to define permanent rules for connection attempts that occurred during that time.
Spotlight isn't putting that file there; that's where the Finder stores the directory-specific preferences (window size/position, list vs icon display etc). If you don't use the Finder (which I mostly don't) then you'll never see these files.
I started using it again a few months ago, and this time I banned myself from "allow all" except for things that I trust/reallly need... It's painful, but also just incredible how many superfluous and obviously-metric-gathering-disguised-as-a-feature apps do. They are relentless.
